Bicyle Crashes

Defining the Problem, cont.

Calculations of cyclist fatalities per miles traveled, as seen with motorized vehicles, is unavailable. Further, efforts to calculate cycling trips taken has been relatively unsuccessful. However, there is reason to believe that there will be an increase in the number of cyclists and bicycling trips made due to the following factors:

  1. Gas prices continuing to rise.
  2. Obesity rates among adults is rising; bicycling is a low impact form of exercise gaining popularity.
  3. Poor air quality driving a need for the use of non-motorized forms of transportation.
  4. Obesity rates among children are rising; walking and bicycling is being encouraged as a method of exercise and getting to and from school.
