Strategies for Youth, a national nonprofit training and policy organization that aims to ensure the best possible outcome for youth interacting with law enforcement, seeks a Law Enforcement Training Director to implement its IADLEST-certified Policing the Teen Brain (PTB) trainings across the U.S. SFY seeks an agile, imaginative, and diligent person, willing to travel across the U.S. to implement the PTB trainings and expand its reach and impact.
This position is 60% FTE and can be conducted remotely when not traveling for training.
The Law Enforcement Training Director’s position has three core responsibilities:
1. Lead Trainer & Training Oversight:
- Presenting Trainings
- Implementation of Train-the-trainers and Coached Trainings
- Recruiting new trainers
- Follow Up/Tickler Syst
2. Promotion of SFY Training & Sales (with Executive Director)
3. Public Speaking/Writing on Value and Need for Training
This position requires a person who is:
- strongly committed to the belief that officers must use developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, equitable approaches to interactions with youth, and to SFY’s mission of reducing arrests and use of force with youth,
- willing to train officers using SFY’s IADLEST certified training curriculum,
- an experienced and successful trainer, preferably IADLEST certified, who wants to continue training in diverse law enforcement environments,
- is able to effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload and meet strict deadlines
- can communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- has a demonstrated skill in coordinating and implementing trainings,
- personable and friendly, easily accessible, willing to work in a team and independently,
- willing to speak to the importance of equipping officers to use developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, equitable approaches with youth through individual training contracts and to broader audiences.
LEAD TRAINER & TRAINING OVERSIGHT:
This position requires the Training Director to serve as the Lead Trainer, present at a majority of PTB trainings, train trainers, and work with SFY Programs Manager on training logistics.
TRAINING: Present, coach, support and mentor new law enforcement trainers, work with training psychologists as well as recruit new trainers:
- Recruit new trainers to expand SFY’s group of trainers
- Engage, train, and keep abreast of trainers’ efforts.
TRAINING IMPLEMENTATION:
- Work with Programs Manager on logistics of training implementation
- Connect with LEA’s points of contact
- Lead trainings at sites across the U.S.
- Conduct post-training check in with sites to ensure roll out of trainings and impacts of training,
- Ensure fidelity of PTB training curriculum at sites continuing to run trainings
- TRAINING EVALUATION:
- Ensure LEAs receive and complete training evaluations,
- Ensure collection of data for researchers’ review
PROMOTE SFY TRAININGS:
This position is primarily funded by sales of trainings to local and state governments. Explaining the training and its goals to potential clients and at public venues, a task that would be shared with the Executive Director, is key to its success and expansion. This includes:
- Presentations by zoom or in person to individual LEAs
- Presentations at conferences, webinars, etc.
- Preparation of invoices and contracts with SFY’s ED.
PUBLIC SPEAKING on NEED FOR TRAINING & POLICIES:
SFY believes that officers should be equipped with training and policies that support officers’ interactions with youth. When incidents or opportunities arise, SFY will work with LE Training Director to present at conferences.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Training Experience:
Required: Certified trainer, minimum of 5 years experience training law enforcement, ability to utilize a variety of teaching styles and methods to accommodate diverse learning styles of students, experience using instructional technologies, including powerpoints, computers, internet resources and other appropriate media.
Preferred: IADLEST training certification, and while curriculum development is not a core responsibility, this position requires review of current research and case law for use in the modification of training curricula and design of new curricula.
Law Enforcement Experience:
Required: 10 year LE experience as patrol officer in municipal law enforcement agency;
Preferred: Time spent as FTO, supervisory experience preferred, experience as SRO, experience in youth programs (e.g. mentoring, PAL), experience in various jurisdictions.
Educational Background:
Minimum requirement of sixty (60) semester units or ninety (90) quarter units of academic level courses from an accredited college or university in public administration, business administration, criminology, police science, or a closely related field.
Preferred: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in public administration, business administration, criminology, police science, or a closely related field is desirable.
